The 50-year cinematic journey of veteran Indian actor Shabana Azmi will be honored in New York next month at the New York Indian Film Festival, an annual event celebrating features and documentaries from the Indian subcontinent.

Celebrating Five Decades of Shabana Azmi: A Tribute at NYIFF 2024

The 24th edition of the NYIFF, renowned as North America’s longest-running and most esteemed Indian film festival, is scheduled to take place from May 31 to June 2. It will feature 49 narrative, documentary, and short films showcasing prominent figures in cinema, such as Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah.

In recognition of Azmi’s remarkable five-decade career in Indian and international cinema, the festival will commemorate this milestone anniversary with a special event. This event will include a screening of her 1996 film “Fire,” directed by Deepa Mehta.

I have been associated with the New York Indian Film Festival since its inception and I am heartened by the progress it has made over the years in leaps and bounds. I am happy that my 50th year is being celebrated at the NYIFF and I look forward to it,” a NYIFF statement quoted Azmi as saying.

Azmi, aged 73, is set to attend this year’s NYIFF, where she will explore her “remarkable journey, from her groundbreaking debut in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Ankur’, to her trailblazing roles that have earned her five National Film Awards and international accolades,” according to the statement.

Highlighting beyond her cinematic achievements, the statement emphasized Azmi’s “dedication to social activism, particularly for the rights of women and the underprivileged,” which is described as truly inspiring.

As a recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, Azmi has appeared in over 140 Hindi films and 12 international productions, including Mehta’s “Midnight’s Children,” Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” and Ismail Merchant’s “In Custody.”

“From her gripping portrayal in ‘Ankur’ to her recent roles in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ and ‘Ghoomer’, her collaborations transcend borders, including projects like Shekhar Kapur’s ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ and Steven Spielberg’s prestigious mini-series ‘Halo’.”

Azmi’s repertoire is a testament to her unparalleled skill and diverse roles. As Shabana Azmi continues to illuminate screens and stages alike with her presence, her legacy as a trailblazer in Indian cinema remains unparalleled,” the statement said.

Vibrancy of Indian Cinema: Highlights from New York Indian Film Festival 2024

The festival, organized by the Indo-American Arts Council, will kick off with the screening of “Dear Jassi”, directed by Indian-American filmmaker Tarsem Singh. Singh, known for his work with Hollywood stars like Jennifer Lopez and Julia Roberts, as well as his music videos for icons such as R.E.M. and Lady Gaga.

Closing the festival will be “Mrs”, featuring Sanya Malhotra in the lead role, directed by Arati Kadav.

Notable highlights of this year’s event include “The Umesh Chronicles”, starring Bachchan and Vivek Gomber, directed by filmmaker Pooja Kaul; Naseeruddin Shah’s appearance in the short film “Khidki”; the documentary “Merchant Ivory”; and Tannishtha Chatterjee starring in American filmmaker Wendy Bednarz’s debut feature film “Yellow Bus”.

This year’s festival line-up features films that “showcase the depth and range of contemporary Indian cinema, including cutting-edge dramas, documentaries, and shorts, some that premiered at Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival,” said IAAC.

NYIFF is a must-watch event for anyone interested in Indian cinema and its growing impact on global cinema. It offers a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the diverse cinematic voices emerging from India today,” added chairman of the Indo-American Arts Council Dr Nirmal Mattoo.

Festival director Aseem Chhabra emphasized the gala’s dedication to promoting diversity and cultural representation in cinema. He noted that this year’s NYIFF will showcase films in 12 languages spoken across India, including Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oria, Punjabi, and Tamil.

IAAC board member Poonam Khubani said the festival’s “selection of films not only epitomises the artistic brilliance we champion but also mirrors the vibrant narratives we strive to share with our community. This year, the amalgamation of cultural richness, outstanding narratives, and stellar performances is poised to make this edition of the festival unparalleled in its appeal.”

The festival presents premieres of feature films, documentaries, and short films created from, about, and within the Indian subcontinent, spanning independent, art-house, alternate, and diaspora genres. In addition to screenings, the event incorporates post-screening discussions, industry panels, and award ceremonies.
