‘No One Was There to Receive Him’: Anil Kapoor’s Heartbreaking Story of How Bollywood Abandoned His Father

Behind every star is a story that the spotlight never quite reaches. Anil Kapoor — the man who turned “jhakaas” into a cultural phenomenon — recently broke down that glossy exterior and shared a deeply personal moment that changed the course of his entire life. It’s the kind of story Bollywood rarely tells about itself.

Anil Kapoor’s Story Overview

What Anil Kapoor Revealed

In a candid interview with Lilly Singh, Anil Kapoor recounted how his father, late producer Surinder Kapoor, backed a high-stakes project featuring the reigning superstar of the era, Rajesh Khanna — and everyone assumed it would break box office records. But the opposite happened, and the film failed to strike a chord with audiences.

The financial loss was painful. But what hit harder was what came after.

“He was travelling from Delhi, then he went to Bangalore, and there was no one there to receive him at the airport. Everybody had absolutely kind of deserted him, disowned him. That was shocking. I could see he was very vulnerable, almost in tears,” shared the emotional 69-year-old star.

That image — of a proud man standing alone at an airport, abandoned by the very industry he had served — stayed with a young Anil Kapoor forever.

How That Moment Made Anil Kapoor the Star He Is

This wasn’t just a sad story filed away in memory. It became the fire.

After the film’s failure, his father’s phone stopped ringing and the support system vanished overnight. A determined Anil then told himself: “I have to become an actor. I have to become a leading man.”

“I wanted to become successful, become a star, most respected, to make him happy and proud of me,” expressed the Hamare Tumhare debutant.

That singular resolve drove one of Bollywood’s most enduring careers — spanning four decades, multiple generations, and an international fanbase from Slumdog Millionaire to Fighter.
