It’s Halloween night. The candy bowl is out, the pumpkins are lit, and someone in your house says, “Let’s watch something scary.” Someone else is already looking for a pillow to hide behind.

If that’s you, relax. Plenty of great Halloween movies bring the costumes, witches and ghosts without the jump scares. Here are eight to pick from tonight.

Halloween Watch Lists

Movie	Year	Vibe	Best For
Hocus Pocus	1993	Witchy comedy	Family night
Beetlejuice	1988	Dark, quirky comedy	Teens and adults
Casper	1995	Sweet ghost story	Young kids
The Addams Family	1991	Gothic humor	Date night
The Nightmare Before Christmas	1993	Musical fantasy	All ages
Ghostbusters	1984	Sci-fi comedy	Nostalgia lovers
Hotel Transylvania	2012	Animated monster fun	Kids
Halloweentown	1998	Cozy magic	Tweens

Why Each One Works?

1. Hocus Pocus: Three goofy witches return to modern-day Salem, and the movie plays everything for laughs. It’s pure comfort viewing. Fun fact: Hocus Pocus wasn’t a hit when it came out but became a Halloween staple over the years.

2. Beetlejuice: Tim Burton’s afterlife comedy is weird, colorful and very funny. The “scary” parts are really just creative, silly special effects.

3. Casper: A lonely, friendly ghost just wants a friend. It’s gentle, a little sad and very sweet, so it’s a safe choice for small kids.

4. The Addams Family: This spooky family is the happiest one on screen. The dry wit and macabre jokes are the main attraction, not the frights.

5. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Jack Skellington’s stop-motion world is striking, and the songs stay in your head for days. It works for Halloween and again in December.

6. Ghostbusters: The ghosts are mostly a backdrop for Bill Murray’s sarcasm. It’s a comedy that happens to have proton packs.

7. Hotel Transylvania: Dracula is an overprotective dad and monsters are goofy. Kids love it and adults will smile too.

8. Halloweentown: A girl learns her family are witches. It’s a cozy, nostalgic Disney Channel favorite that feels like autumn in movie form.

Tips for the Perfect Night In

Pick by the youngest viewer. If a small child is watching, start with Casper or Hotel Transylvania.
Mix comedy and music. One laugh-out-loud film and one musical keeps the mood light.
Snack with a theme. Pumpkin popcorn, caramel apples and hot cocoa make it a real event.
