Why Is Neymar Benched for Brazil vs Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Brazil vs Japan: The question Brazilian fans have been dreading all tournament has arrived again. Tonight, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Brazil face Japan in the Round of 32 — and Neymar Jr, the Seleção’s greatest ever goalscorer, is not starting. Again.

Still Not Ready. But Getting Closer.

The 34-year-old forward came into the tournament with a grade two calf strain and did not play at all in the first two group-stage games against Morocco and Haiti, with reports suggesting the staff were deliberately protecting him for the knockout stages.

There had been genuine hope he’d earn a starting berth tonight. Those hopes were strengthened when he came off the bench late against Scotland — a match Brazil won 3-0 — and the player looked good during his short cameo. Ahead of the Japan match, head coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated Neymar was fully fit and ready to play.

And yet, the team sheet came out — and Neymar was among the substitutes.

It seems he has not recovered enough to start or play the full 90 minutes. Instead, he will likely come off the bench in the second half as an impact substitute.

Brazil’s Attacking Setup Without Neymar

Rather than start the Santos forward, Ancelotti opted to play Bournemouth youngster Rayan on the right flank, accompanied by Vinícius Jr on the left, with Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha leading the line. It’s an exciting young front three — but it’s not Neymar.

Brazil vs Japan — Key Facts

Why This Matters Beyond Tonight

Neymar remains the Seleção’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals. And he has a terrific record against Japan specifically — nine goals in just five matches, his best goalscoring record against any international side.

If Brazil need him tonight, he’ll be there. If they cruise without him, Ancelotti saves a fully fit Neymar for the quarterfinals. Either way, the greatest Brazilian of his generation is inching closer to the stage this World Cup deserves him on.
