Scalpels and Secrets: Netflix’s New J-Drama ‘Plastic Beauty’ Cuts Deep Into the Beauty Industry

Two brilliant, opposing minds. One cosmetic surgery clinic. Netflix’s upcoming medical J-drama Plastic Beauty is pitting Alice in Borderland star Riisa Naka against rising talent Mayu Matsuoka in a battle over what medicine — and beauty — is really for.

Here’s everything confirmed so far.

Plastic Beauty: Overview

What Is Plastic Beauty About?

The story follows Fumi Numata, a gifted surgeon pushed out of her hospital after a high-stakes emergency operation. Determined to expose the darker side of the cosmetic surgery world, she takes a job at the clinic of Rin Tohyama, a celebrity cosmetic surgeon who believes beauty itself has the power to heal. The two women clash almost immediately, each holding a fundamentally different view of what medicine should stand for — setting up a tense, character-driven drama rather than a simple hospital procedural.

Who’s Leading the Cast?

Mayu Matsuoka plays Fumi Numata. She’s no stranger to Netflix audiences, having appeared in The Greatest Teacher, The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, Hell Dogs, and Dr. Storks.

Riisa Naka takes on the role of Rin Tohyama. Naka has built a strong Netflix résumé too, with credits including Alice in Borderland, I Love You Just a Little Bit, Let’s Get Divorced, and Cells at Work.

They’re joined by a large supporting cast, including Shotaro Mamiya as Rui Komiya, Minami Tanaka as Nanami Todoroki, and Atsuro Watabe as Arata Tohyama, among many others rounding out the ensemble.

Why This One’s Worth Watching

Medical dramas are a proven format in Japanese television, and Plastic Beauty leans into a genuinely timely theme — the tension between authentic medicine and the beauty industry’s promises. It’s the kind of morally layered setup that’s fueled the popularity of J-drama as a genre worldwide, with character conflict driving the story just as much as plot twists.

With two strong female leads at odds and a director known for character-focused storytelling, this has the makings of one of Netflix’s more compelling international drops this fall.
