Netflix Just Killed A-Z Sorting on Its Website — And Power Users Are Not Happy About It

If you’ve spent years carefully browsing Netflix by alphabetical order, sorting by release year, or scrolling through full genre grids on your laptop — bad news. That level of control is gone. Netflix has quietly removed one of its most useful power-user features from its desktop web interface, and it did so without a single announcement.

What Exactly Has Netflix Removed?

In a quiet, unannounced update, Netflix has removed the ability to sort movies and TV shows by alphabetical order (A-Z) and other options on its desktop website. For years, power users have bypassed Netflix’s algorithmic recommendations by clicking into the “Movies” or “TV Shows” tabs, switching to the grid view, and using the drop-down menu on the far right. This menu allowed sorting by “Suggestions for you,” “Year Released,” “A-Z,” and “Z-A.” Now, that drop-down menu has simply vanished. TechWiser

Alongside the removal of sorting, Netflix has also made it impossible to click on genre rows to bring up the full list of titles in a grid format, although navigating to category codes directly still works for the time being. Netflix’s New & Popular tab has also become harder to use in recent months, with many titles listed in the Worth the Wait section in particular no longer showing exact release dates. TechWiser

What Features Have Been Lost?

Why Is Netflix Doing This?

One could argue that these features were fairly niche and mainly used by power users and not widely used by people discovering content on Netflix. It also plays into a loss of engagement — the longer you spend scrolling through a massive, static A-Z list, the more likely you are to close the app.

There’s also a platform alignment angle. These A-Z options have not been available on mobile or in the TV app for a while, so it could be a case of bringing the web experience more in line with those devices and reducing the tech stack.

And there’s a more cynical theory doing the rounds on Reddit. Some will no doubt speculate that hiding raw A-Z lists obscures the actual size of Netflix’s catalog. A straight alphabetical list makes it very easy to see when a specific genre is lacking in volume. Algorithmic rows, which often repeat the same titles across multiple categories, create the illusion of infinite content.

Part of a Much Bigger UI Overhaul

This isn’t an isolated move. Netflix recently unveiled a massive overhaul for smart TVs and consoles. As part of this update, they retired the beloved “New & Popular” and “Categories” tabs from the left-side menu, replacing them with a simplified, centralized homepage. To replace traditional browsing, Netflix’s overhauled mobile interface introduced a brand-new OpenAI-powered search engine (still in beta), alongside a continuous TikTok-style scrolling feed to serve up trailers and clips, which officially launched in a number of countries last week.

The direction is unmistakable: Netflix is betting everything on the algorithm and AI-powered discovery, and is actively removing the tools that let users route around it.

What Are Subscribers Saying?

In the r/Netflix subreddit, multiple threads have popped up over the last few days questioning the removal. One Redditor complained: “Sometimes I just want to scroll through a straight list of all the horror movies they have without the algorithm hiding older titles from me. Taking away basic A-Z sorting makes zero sense.” TechWiser

The frustration is real and understandable. For users who use Netflix on desktop specifically to do deliberate, methodical browsing — especially to find older titles the algorithm never surfaces — this change removes a meaningful layer of control.
