Nayanthara & Kavin’s ‘Hi’ — Why Director Vishnu Edavan Chose This Unusual Pair for 2026’s Most Anticipated Tamil Romance

Hi, the upcoming Tamil romantic drama starring Nayanthara and Kavin, is one of the most-talked-about South Indian films of 2026 — and director Vishnu Edavan has finally opened up about the casting choices, the plot, and what makes this film tick differently from the rest.

Hi (2026) — Everything We Know So Far

Why Nayanthara? The Director Explains

Director Vishnu Edavan, speaking with Cinema Vikatan, revealed that he wrote the story specifically with Nayanthara in mind — and as soon as she heard it, she agreed to come on board. Interestingly, it was Nayanthara herself who suggested keeping the title simple, leading to the two-letter name Hi, which is closely tied to the film’s narrative.

That’s the kind of organic creative alignment that makes a film feel special before a single frame is shot.

Why Kavin — And Not a Bigger Star?

This is the question everyone’s been asking. Nayanthara is one of Tamil cinema’s biggest names, so pairing her with Kavin — primarily known from television and Bigg Boss Tamil — raised eyebrows.

Vishnu Edavan addressed this directly, saying that while everyone was surprised by the pairing, every character in the film is important, with the lead couple’s love story being the main highlight. The director explained that rather than imagining a big star opposite Nayanthara, they wanted a fresh and relatable face — and that’s exactly why Kavin was brought into the project.

It’s a bold call, and honestly, a refreshing one. Sometimes, an unexpected pairing is exactly what a love story needs.

What Is Hi Actually About?

The film’s plot revolves around a man with a stable job who decides to get married, but has a very specific idea of the woman he wants. The story then follows his journey to become worthy of her — exploring a mature and grounded romance between the two leads.

Early reports also suggest the film is set in a residential building, where the two lead characters are neighbours. The premise feels warm, human, and very much in the tradition of feel-good Tamil romances that audiences genuinely miss seeing on the big screen.

Vishnu Edavan’s Vision — A Film Like Yaaradi Nee Mohini

The director shared that he has always loved feel-good films and has wanted to make movies in the style of Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Santosh Subramaniam — and Hi is built on exactly that philosophy.

Given that Vishnu Edavan previously worked as a lyricist and as an assistant to director Lokesh Kanagaraj, his sensibility brings both emotional depth and sharp storytelling instincts to the project.

Nayanthara’s Packed 2026 Lineup

Beyond Hi, Nayanthara has a stacked year ahead. She appears in a key role in the Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups, now slated for a June 4, 2026 release after being postponed from March. She is also attached to Salman Khan’s next with director Vamshi Paidipally, along with Patriot, Dear Students, and Mookuthi Amman 2.
