The Double Standard Reality

In a revealing conversation with PTI, Singh highlighted Bollywood’s uncomfortable truth: while men in their 60s continue romancing actresses decades younger, women face career limitations once they cross 40. The Border 2 star has personally experienced this bias, often being asked why she plays “older” characters despite being in her prime.

“It’s sad that Bollywood is the only industry where women come with an expiry date,” Mona stated firmly. “Whereas men in their 60s can still play the romantic leads, women can’t.”

Why Mona Doesn’t Care About On-Screen Age

Singh’s approach defies industry norms. She confidently takes roles regardless of character age because “it’s the character that excites me.” From playing Kareena Kapoor Khan’s elder sister to portraying Sunny Deol’s wife, the actress prioritizes substance over superficial concerns.

Her impressive filmography proves her point:

Mona Sahastrabuddhe in 3 Idiots (2009)
Gurpreet Kaur Chaddha in Laal Singh Chaddha (2022)
Simi Kaler in Border 2 (2026)

Recent Work: Breaking Barriers

Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos – Mona kicked off 2026 playing a don in Vir Das’s directorial debut, backed by Aamir Khan Productions. The unconventional role showcases her versatility alongside Das, Mithila Palkar, and Sharib Hashmi. Even Imran Khan made his comeback in this comedy-drama.

Border 2 – As Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler’s wife, Singh brought depth to the war film starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Diljit Dosanjh. The box office hit further cemented her position as an actress unafraid of “mature” roles.

Kohrra 2 – Her upcoming Netflix crime thriller (streaming February 11, 2026) sees her playing a competent cop opposite Barun Sobti, proving streaming platforms offer better opportunities for actresses beyond conventional age barriers.

The Confidence Factor

Singh attributes her career longevity to confidence and self-awareness. “I’m very confident and know who I am. There’s nothing to prove,” she explained, adding that this mindset allows her to take creative risks without worrying about industry perceptions.

Her decision to freeze her eggs demonstrates this same pragmatic approach—prioritizing career opportunities while keeping future options open.
