Every industry has its uncomfortable truths — the ones insiders whisper about but rarely put on screen. “Mollywood Times” doesn’t whisper. It states them outright, wrapped in the story of one obsessive filmmaker’s rise, fall, and refusal to compromise.

Directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak as the second chapter in his “success trilogy,” the film follows Vineeth Madhavan (Naslen), an aspiring horror director from Kuttikkanam chasing greatness in Malayalam cinema, inspired heavily by M. Night Shyamalan. His climb from short films to his feature debut becomes a battleground of industry politics, creative sacrifice, and the real cost of protecting one’s vision.

What Works

The film’s biggest strength is its refusal to soften its protagonist. Vineeth is morally grey in a way rarely attempted in Malayalam cinema, and his arc — from wide-eyed optimism to hardened cynicism — lands especially hard once talent starts losing to privilege. The second half, where he navigates industry power plays and the fallout of protecting his own film, is where the story truly sharpens.

Naslen anchors it all with real range, moving well beyond his usual romantic-comedy comfort zone into something far more calculated and internal.

What Doesn’t

This isn’t a film built for easy rooting interest. Vineeth is too flawed to be a hero and too relatable to be a villain, which may frustrate viewers wanting a clearer moral throughline. The narrative could also have been slightly more fleshed out in places.

The Verdict

Raw, unapologetic, and technically sharp — especially in its music and editing — “Mollywood Times” won’t win over everyone, but it delivers exactly what fans of Abhinav’s earlier work would expect.
