Some DCU reveals arrive with a bang, and others arrive with a throwaway joke that quietly changes everything. Episode 7 of HBO’s Lanterns is the second kind. In one funny exchange between John Stewart and a backup of Hal Jordan’s consciousness, James Gunn’s DCU just gained its first truly Galactus-sized hero.

The Moment Mogo Arrived

After Hal’s funeral, John Stewart digs up Hal’s ring and makes contact with the “Halogram.” In “The Jordan Boys Legacy,” John claims the whole Green Lantern Corps attended the ceremony and lit up the night sky, including Mogo. Hal calls the bluff, pointing out that Mogo is a planet.

It’s a clever payoff. Earlier in the series, Hal used a line about Mogo not socializing as a password, a nod to a classic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons story. Episode 7 takes it further by confirming that Mogo actually exists in the DCU.

What Does Mogo Do?

Mogo can’t police the universe like other Corps members, but he plays a vital role. He guides rings from fallen Green Lanterns to their successors and lets his surface act as a training ground. That makes him far kinder than other sentient planets in comics, such as Marvel’s Ego, who tried to take over the universe in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Gunn directed that film, so it’s fair to say he enjoys massive characters.

Giant Heroes Who Could Come Next?

Since Gunn runs DC Studios, he can keep digging into comic lore for more colossal figures. Four candidates stand out.

Atom Smasher is Al Rothstein, who can manipulate his molecular structure and grow to around 60 feet. He’s a standout Justice League member in the comics, but Noah Centineo already played him in Black Adam. Since Gunn didn’t embrace that film, a fresh start may be better.

Colossal Boy is Gim Allon, a Legion of Super-Heroes member who debuted in 1960 and can increase his size. The Legion’s future setting gives writers plenty of freedom, and its odd powers suit Gunn’s taste.

The Spectre is a cosmic being who can grow as large as a mountain. The Arrowverse introduced a version during Crisis on Infinite Earths, but only briefly, so a more faithful live-action take could follow.

The Thought Robot is a giant weapon from Final Crisis created to protect reality, which takes Superman’s form. It sounds outlandish, but Superman needs a few more projects before facing a metal version of himself.

Why It Matters

The Mogo reveal shows how confidently the DCU is building its cosmic side. Small touches like this make the universe feel lived-in and set up bigger stories without lengthy exposition.
