Lanterns Just Killed Off Its Biggest Villain — And More DCU Threats Are Already Lining Up

Just when fans got attached to one of the DCU’s most fascinating antagonists, James Gunn’s universe pulled the trigger. Lanterns has officially killed off its central villain, but if you think that means the danger is over, DC Studios has a lot more waiting in the wings.

Zoe Macon’s Shocking Downfall

Lanterns introduced Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe Macon as a mysterious figure hiding in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska. What started as a small-town mystery investigated by Hal Jordan and John Stewart turned into a much bigger reveal: Zoe was actually the last surviving Manhunter, a synthetic being originally created as an intergalactic police force before the Guardians deemed her kind too brutal and shut the program down.

Zoe had spent decades protecting her secret by quietly helping Rushville’s residents, healing illnesses, saving lives, and even marrying into the community. But her manipulation eventually extended to John Stewart himself, and despite their complicated connection, he ultimately made the call to end her, closing out one of the show’s most compelling storylines.

Who’s Coming Next in the DCU?

Zoe’s death doesn’t mean the danger is fading. Gunn’s universe already has a lineup of major villains set to shake things up.

Why This Matters for the DCU’s Future?

Lex Luthor’s return is especially notable — this time equipped with his comic-accurate Warsuit, making him a far greater physical threat than in his 2025 debut. Interestingly, reports suggest Lex may form an uneasy alliance with Superman against Brainiac, a classic “Collector of Worlds” villain known for shrinking entire cities.

Meanwhile, Darkseid’s animated introduction in Mister Miracle signals Gunn’s willingness to build out cosmic-level threats slowly, rather than rushing his universe’s biggest bads onto the big screen too soon.
