Some policy shifts happen quietly. This one comes after months of public pressure. Meta has agreed to directly report child safety cases to Indian law enforcement, marking a genuine shift in how the tech giant cooperates with authorities on one of the internet’s most serious problems.

The company confirmed it will now report child safety matters straight to India’s cybercrime portal, managed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) — moving away from a more indirect reporting route it had relied on until now.

How Reporting Worked Before

Previously, Meta routed child safety reports through the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which then shared relevant reports with India’s national cybercrime portal on Meta’s behalf. That extra step meant Indian authorities weren’t receiving reports directly from the platform itself — a gap that drew scrutiny after a BBC Eye investigation alleged Instagram carried paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material.

Why the Government Pushed for This

MeitY had summoned Meta and ordered Instagram to disable the flagged advertisements, demanding a detailed explanation. The National Human Rights Commission separately directed Delhi Police to investigate whether Meta had met its mandatory reporting obligations under the POCSO Act. Government sources have called Meta’s new commitment a first step, but stressed that child safety on social media remains non-negotiable, with more discussions ongoing with other platforms.

What This Means Going Forward

A Meta spokesperson said protecting children on its platforms remains a priority and that the company is committed to working with the government to ensure accountability for perpetrators. Meta is now the first major tech intermediary to commit to a direct reporting pipeline with Indian law enforcement — a move that could set a precedent for how other platforms operating in India are expected to respond to similar concerns.

FAQs

What has Meta agreed to do differently?

Meta will now report child safety cases directly to India’s I4C-managed cybercrime portal instead of routing them through NCMEC.

Why did the government push for this change?

Following a BBC investigation into CSAM ads on Instagram, MeitY demanded stronger accountability and direct reporting from Meta.
