Tax filing has long felt out of reach for India’s gig workforce — but that’s starting to change. Meesho‘s logistics arm, Valmo, has rolled out an initiative helping its delivery partners file Income Tax Returns (ITR), and the early numbers suggest it’s striking a real chord with first-time filers.

Why This Matters For Gig Workers?

Delivery partners, including bike riders, often have tax deducted from their payouts throughout the year (TDS). Many, however, never file returns to claim back the excess amount — largely due to unfamiliarity with the process. Valmo’s programme directly addresses this gap, helping partners not only recover eligible refunds but also build a formal financial record, which can later support access to loans, credit, and other financial services.

Since launching in July, the initiative has already seen close to 10,000 delivery partners initiate their ITR filing, resulting in roughly ₹2 crore in claimed refunds. What stands out most is that nearly 70% of these filers are doing so for the very first time — a strong signal of the programme’s role in driving genuine financial inclusion.

Leadership’s Take

Dhiresh Bansal, Chief Financial Officer at Meesho, noted that as Valmo’s network grows, the company wants to make filing simpler for partners while helping them build a formal financial record to support their long-term goals. He added that the high share of first-time filers reinforces how such initiatives can meaningfully expand financial inclusion.

Making Filing Accessible

To reach its delivery partners effectively, Valmo used WhatsApp and its internal Training Management System to share filing information in seven regional languages. Partners could then access the ClearTax platform directly through these channels to begin their ITR filing, with dedicated support available throughout the process — removing much of the friction that typically discourages gig workers from filing altogether.
