Sicily’s winding roads are calling, and the Getaway Driver achievement in Mafia: The Old Country is testing your need for speed. This achievement requires you to drive at 120 km/h for at least 15 seconds, earning you a respectable 30 Gamerscore points in the process.

While it might sound straightforward, achieving this speed milestone in 1900s Sicily presents unique challenges. The period-authentic vehicles, narrow cobblestone streets, and realistic physics engine demand both skill and strategy. Whether you’re a completionist hunting every achievement or simply want to experience the thrill of vintage high-speed driving, this guide will get you there.

Mafia: The Old Country: Understanding the Achievement Requirements

The Getaway Driver achievement is worth 30 Gamerscore and specifically requires maintaining a speed of 140mph (120 km/h) for 15 continuous seconds. The key word here is “continuous” – any significant slowdown resets your progress toward the achievement.

The game tracks your speed in real-time, so you’ll need to find the perfect combination of vehicle, route, and driving technique to sustain this velocity without crashing or losing momentum.

Best Vehicles for Speed Achievement

Vehicle	Top Speed	Acceleration	Handling	Availability
Garzia Tumulto	Excellent	High	Superior	Mid-Game
Cicciu	Very Good	Medium	Good	Early Game
Cosimo	Good	High	Fair	Story Progress
Ercole	Fair	Medium	Excellent	Late Game
Nivula	Good	Low	Superior	Mid-Game

The Garzia Tumulto stands out as the strongest all-around car in the game, holding maximum stats that make it ideal for speed-focused achievements. Its superior handling ensures you can maintain control while pushing maximum velocity.

For players early in their journey, the Cicciu offers the best balance of speed and availability, while the Cosimo provides excellent acceleration to reach target speeds quickly.

Optimal Routes for Speed Runs

Countryside Roads: The rural areas outside Palermo offer the longest straight stretches with minimal traffic interference. These roads provide the best opportunity for sustained high-speed driving without navigation challenges.

Highway Sections: Certain story missions unlock highway-style roads that are perfect for speed achievements. These areas feature wider lanes and gentler curves that accommodate high-velocity driving.

Coastal Routes: The scenic coastal roads provide excellent visibility and long straight sections, though wind conditions can occasionally affect vehicle handling at extreme speeds.

Advanced Driving Techniques

Momentum Management: Driving is one of the main features in Mafia: The Old Country, requiring careful attention to momentum conservation. Avoid unnecessary braking and plan your acceleration zones strategically.

Cornering at Speed: Master the art of taking corners without losing significant velocity. Use gentle steering inputs and throttle modulation to maintain speed through curves while avoiding spin-outs.

Traffic Navigation: Learn to predict and navigate around slower vehicles and pedestrians without compromising your speed run attempts.

Common Achievement Pitfalls

Speed Confusion: Some players get confused between the metric (120 km/h) and imperial (75 mph) measurements. Focus on the speedometer reading rather than converting between units during gameplay.

Route Selection: Attempting this achievement in busy urban areas almost guarantees failure. The narrow streets, pedestrians, and frequent intersections make sustained high speeds nearly impossible.

Vehicle Condition: Damaged vehicles perform significantly worse at high speeds. Ensure your car is in pristine condition before attempting speed runs.

Strategic Timing Tips

Mission Context: Certain story missions provide natural opportunities for high-speed driving without the risk of police interference. These moments often feature chase sequences or time-sensitive objectives that encourage maximum velocity.

Free Roam Preparation: When attempting the achievement outside missions, plan your route carefully and ensure you understand the traffic patterns in your chosen area.

Weather Considerations: Rain and adverse weather conditions significantly impact vehicle handling at high speeds. Attempt the achievement during clear weather for optimal results.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Speed Not Registering: Ensure you’re maintaining exactly 120 km/h or higher for the full 15-second duration. Brief dips below this threshold reset your progress counter.

Achievement Not Unlocking: Restart the game if the achievement doesn’t trigger immediately after meeting requirements. Sometimes there’s a brief delay in achievement recognition.

Vehicle Performance: If your chosen vehicle can’t reach the required speed, try different cars or ensure you’re driving on flat, straight roads rather than uphill sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use any vehicle to get the Getaway Driver achievement?

A: Technically yes, but faster vehicles like the Garzia Tumulto significantly increase your chances of success. Slower vehicles may struggle to reach and maintain 120 km/h, especially on inclined roads or during adverse conditions.

Q: Does the achievement work during chase sequences or only in free roam?

A: The achievement can be unlocked during any gameplay situation where you’re driving, including story missions, chase sequences, and free roam exploration. Mission contexts often provide the best opportunities due to cleared roads and scripted scenarios.
