Tony Stark’s void has haunted the MCU since Avengers: Endgame. War Machine couldn’t fill it. Ironheart couldn’t either. Now Marvel may have finally cracked it — with a mutant, not an Avenger.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Asa Germann (Gen V) has been cast as Warren Worthington III, aka Angel, in Jake Schreier’s upcoming X-Men reboot, hitting theaters May 5, 2028. He originally auditioned for Cyclops — a role that went to Kit Connor — but impressed Marvel enough to land Angel instead.
Why Angel Fits the Tony Stark Mold
In the comics, Warren isn’t just a mutant with wings — he’s a playboy billionaire, heir to Worthington Industries, and the financial backbone behind mutant causes.
| Trait | Tony Stark (Iron Man) | Warren Worthington (Angel) |
|---|---|---|
| Wealth | Stark Industries fortune | Worthington Industries fortune |
| Personality | Charismatic, confident, self-destructive | Charismatic, outgoing, self-destructive |
| Funded a team | The Avengers | X-Factor & X-Corp |
| Inner conflict | Guilt over parents’ murder | Guilt over his father’s death |
| Signature ability | Iron Man suit | Flight, super strength, regeneration |
Where Past Successors Fell Short
Don Cheadle’s War Machine seemed like the obvious heir, but Marvel’s handling of the character stumbled badly — including the Secret Invasion Skrull-swap twist that undercut his arc, and a shelved Armor Wars project. Ironheart, meanwhile, shared little of Stark’s background or temperament beyond the suit itself, making the “successor” label never quite stick.
Angel, by contrast, mirrors Stark’s core contradiction: dazzling confidence on the surface, real damage underneath. If Marvel Studios sticks the landing, this could be the first true spiritual successor the MCU has produced since Endgame.
