The Heart Behind the Laughs

What makes this documentary genuinely special isn’t the celebrity anecdotes — it’s Nancy. Early on, the late Catherine O’Hara shared how when she and her husband had a rough patch, their therapist asked what couple they wanted to emulate. They said Marty and Nancy. The therapist responded, “I can’t tell you how many couples have said this.”

And then there’s Short’s most quietly profound piece of wisdom, delivered to a young John Mulaney after a TV failure: “98% of it is failure. This is what the job is” — a lesson Mulaney summarises as “Nothing works, and then something works.” That line alone is worth the watch.

Nancy Dolman kept living freely every day after her ovarian cancer diagnosis, inspiring Martin to keep working rather than wallow in grief — because doing anything less would have been a disservice to her. whats-on-netflix
