‘Maradona Super Cup’ between Euro and Copa America winners to happen?

Argentina clinched their first continental crown in 28 years as they dispatched rivals Brazil at their home stadium by defeating them 1-0. Less than 24 hours later, Italy became the champions of Europe as they defeated England at their home ground of Wembley Stadium on penalties.

Spanish newspaper Ole has now put forward the idea of having a continental Super Cup between the winners of the two tournaments, dubbing the fixture the ‘Maradona Super Cup’. “Can you imagine a Super Cup between the champions of America and that of Europe? What better tribute for the No.10,” Ole wrote in their columns proposing the tournament.

Maradona is hailed as a legend in both continents. He featured most notably for Napoli, and they even had their stadium renamed after him following his demise in November. For Argentina, Maradona helped them win the World Cup and also cemented himself as a legend with the Hand of God, and the half-line dash given the goal of the century award.

UEFA host a Super Cup fixture between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League every year. Last season, it was between Bayern Munich and Sevilla, and the Germans came out on top. This season’s fixture will take place between Chelsea and Villarreal to determine the single best team in Europe.

Surely, CONMEBOL and UEFA collaborating to bring the fans such a big match will bear well for them and fans can only keep their fingers crossed that it actually happens.
