Manuel Neuer New Contract – DONE DEAL: Bayern Munich Legend Extends Until 2027

Manuel Neuer is set to extend his legendary stay at Bayern Munich after reportedly reaching a total agreement over a contract extension, with the veteran goalkeeper, who recently turned 40, committing to the Bavarian giants for a further year, ensuring his era at the Allianz Arena continues until at least 2027.

The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has brought an end to months of speculation about his future, with Sky Germany reporting that he has reached a “complete agreement” to extend his contract with Bayern Munich until June 30, 2027. The extension is expected to be finalised before the club’s final home game of the Bundesliga season against FC Koln this Saturday.

Contract Details and Salary Reduction

Although Neuer currently earns a salary reportedly as high as €20m per annum, his new deal will feature a reduced figure. A key part of the negotiations involved a significant reduction in his base salary. The decision to accept reduced terms underscores Neuer’s commitment to the club and his willingness to facilitate squad planning for the coming seasons.

A Legendary Bayern Career

Having joined the club from Schalke in 2011, Neuer has established himself as arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the club’s history, and this latest deal allows him to push toward even more records in the twilight of his career. During his tenure, he has secured 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies, becoming the face of the club’s modern golden era. After wrapping up his 13th Bundesliga title, Neuer equalled Thomas Müller’s haul while another season in Germany’s top flight could see him surpass Oliver Kahn in all-time appearances.

Impact on Squad Planning

Additionally, Bayern’s secondary goalkeeper Jonas Urbig is expected to receive greater opportunities on the pitch than his present record of 13 Bundesliga matches during the 2025/26 season. Bayern’s coaching staff are determined to integrate Urbig more frequently to ensure a smooth transition when Neuer eventually decides to hang up his gloves. Furthermore, the club intends to keep veteran backup Sven Ulreich, while younger prospects like Leonard Prescott are expected to be sent out on loan or integrated into the reserve setup to continue their growth.

Goalkeeper Hierarchy 2026-27

Still Performing at Elite Level

Despite his age, his performance levels remain high, and his presence is still considered vital by the club’s board and influential figures. The news comes as a major boost to the club hierarchy, who were keen to retain the services of their captain for another campaign.

The legendary goalkeeper revolutionized the position with his “sweeper-keeper” style, becoming known for his ability to rush off his line and act as an additional defender. His influence extends beyond shot-stopping, with his leadership and experience proving invaluable to Bayern’s success over more than a decade.

Chasing History

By extending his stay until 2027, Neuer will have the opportunity to surpass 600 appearances for the club, further cementing his place in the history books. This milestone would place him among the most decorated and longest-serving players in Bayern Munich’s illustrious history.

World Cup Speculation

Despite announcing his retirement from international football in August 2024, there is mounting talk within the German Football Association (DFB) that Neuer could still be included in Julian Nagelsmann’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which would mark a dramatic return to international duty for Bayern’s veteran goalkeeper.

Legacy and Future

Rummenigge highlighted Neuer’s leadership and mentor role for successor Jonas Urbig. The extension ensures a smooth transition period where Neuer can pass on his knowledge while Bayern gradually prepares for life after their legendary captain.

This contract extension represents more than just another year of service—it’s an acknowledgment of Neuer’s unparalleled contribution to Bayern Munich and a testament to his enduring quality at the highest level of European football.
