Thala fans, your patience has paid off! Ajith Kumar’s iconic 2011 action thriller Mankatha is back in theaters, and it’s already rewriting history with the biggest pre-sales ever recorded for a re-release in Tamil Nadu.

Ajith Kumar Dethrones Vijay’s Ghilli

In a stunning turn of events, Mankatha has surpassed Ghilli’s previous pre-sales record of ₹2.15 crore to become the highest-grossing re-release advance booking in Tamil Nadu history. According to Box Office India, this demonstrates the enduring star power of Ajith Kumar among Tamil audiences.

While Ghilli still holds the overall re-release revenue record with over ₹26.50 crore lifetime collections, Mankatha’s explosive opening day advance suggests it might challenge that throne too. The momentum indicates fans are hungry to relive this cult classic on the big screen.

Why Mankatha Remains a Cultural Phenomenon

Directed by Venkat Prabhu, Mankatha tells the gripping story of Vinayak Mahadevan, a suspended Mumbai police officer who infiltrates a gang planning to steal ₹500 crore from illegal IPL betting. What makes the film unforgettable is its morally grey protagonist—Vinayak isn’t your typical hero. He manipulates, betrays, and double-crosses everyone to claim the cash for himself.

The cat-and-mouse game between Vinayak and relentless cops creates edge-of-your-seat thrills, with multiple plot twists revealing that nobody is who they seem. Ajith’s iconic portrayal earned him the self-proclaimed title of “Kingmaker” in Tamil cinema.

The stellar ensemble cast includes Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Raai Laxmi, Anjali, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav, Ashwin Kakumanu, and Premji Amaren, each delivering memorable performances that elevated this action thriller to legendary status.

What This Means for the Box Office

With such phenomenal advance booking numbers, Mankatha is positioned for a massive opening day. Industry experts predict it could challenge Ghilli’s Day 1 re-release record and potentially become the highest-grossing re-release ever in Tamil Nadu if the weekend momentum sustains.
