What Mamitha Said — And Why It Resonates

The backlash against Malayalam cinema actors being cast in Tamil projects has been a recurring flash point. When asked directly about the criticism in a YouTube interview, Mamitha didn’t sidestep it for even a moment.

Speaking to journalist Sudhir Srinivasan, she said: “When I got the opportunity, I took it. As an actor, I look toward exploring more and becoming more versatile. It is the maker’s choice first; they see me in a particular character. I can’t say no… I want to work and earn that position.”

She also went further, addressing the responsibility she feels as an actor to push past perceived limitations. Mamitha added: “It is all about pushing boundaries, including language. It is my profession and my responsibility to push those boundaries, and we have to do that. If I am able to look convincing in that character, that is my goal — if it is a rural character and I look convincing in it, that is the biggest reward for me.”

Honest, humble, and completely devoid of defensiveness. That’s the kind of answer that wins people over
