Dhanush’s Kara Is Now on Netflix — Here’s Why You Should Watch It This Weekend

Dhanush’s Kara Is Now on Netflix: A thief who tries to leave his criminal past behind, only to be dragged back in by debt and systemic corruption — that’s the simple, devastating premise at the heart of Kara. Dhanush’s 54th film as a lead actor is now officially streaming on Netflix, and if you missed it in theatres, this weekend is your chance to catch up.

What Is Kara About?

Set in 1991 amidst fuel shortages caused by the Gulf War, Kara is a Tamil heist action thriller directed by Vignesh Raja, co-written with Alfred Prakash. The plot follows a reformed thief whose fate takes a cruel turn when a bank aggressively seizes his family’s ancestral land — forcing Karasaami back into a world he’d sworn to leave.

The film is set against the rugged backdrop of Ramanathapuram and follows Karasaami (Dhanush) who, after a brush with the law, tries to go straight by opening a modest eatery with his wife Selli (Mamitha Baiju).

Should You Watch It?

The consensus is nuanced. The drama builds steadily and then explodes into an intensity-peaked interval block — the grounded storytelling, strong supporting cast performances, and perfectly in-sync music elevate the experience. Though the second half loses some sharpness, slipping into a more familiar narrative zone, it still holds up well thanks to a tense atmospheric mood and top-notch craftsmanship.

Dhanush’s rugged, impactful performance was well-received by viewers, though its cliché-ridden and predictable storyline was one of the big things that hurt the film. Mamitha Baiju performed well as Selli and utilised her limited screen space impressively, especially in emotional sequences alongside Dhanush.

As Letterboxd reviewers note, the cat-and-mouse dynamic between Dhanush, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Jayaram works well for most of the runtime — it’s a film worth watching for the first half alone. The Box Office Context

Kara suffered from poor advance bookings, low promotional hype, and polarised reception, barely managing to cross the ₹50 crore mark against its massive ₹100 crore budget. Netflix’s pan-India multilingual release could be the reset this film deserves — rural 1990s period dramas often find a second life on streaming, free from opening-weekend pressure.
