Maharashtra is launching India’s most ambitious environmental initiative! Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a mission to plant 300 crore trees between 2026 and 2031, targeting 33% forest cover while creating thousands of rural jobs.

Maharashtra Mission Overview

Mission Targets at a Glance

Category	Details
Total Trees	300 Crore (3 billion)
Timeline	2026-2031 (5 years)
Forest Cover Goal	33% of state area
Authority	Green Maharashtra Authority
Key Focus Areas	Marathwada region

What Makes This Different?

Unlike traditional drives, this mission involves startups, NGOs, and Self-Help Groups, creating rural economic benefits. Smart technology brings AI-powered satellite monitoring for real-time tracking, while a 10-year maintenance plan ensures tree survival—addressing past failures.

Employment & Environmental Impact

This green mission generates massive rural employment by involving Self-Help Groups and local communities. Priority areas include low-forest-cover regions like Marathwada, addressing both environmental degradation and unemployment.

Multiple Benefits

Benefit	Impact
Groundwater Recharge	Improved water table
Soil Conservation	Reduced erosion
Rural Jobs	Sustainable livelihoods
Climate Mitigation	Carbon sequestration
Economic Value	Bamboo, teak plantation

Government Commitment & Participation

CM Fadnavis confirmed the programme will be executed in mission mode, with the Green Maharashtra Authority proposal going to Cabinet. Maharashtra has already led in PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, demonstrating proven capability.

The mission welcomes participation from startups (innovative solutions), NGOs (community mobilization), private nurseries (quality saplings), and citizens through local drives. Visit the Maharashtra Forest Department for updates.

This aligns with India’s broader environmental sustainability goals and climate action initiatives.
