Maa Behen Netflix Review: Madhuri Dixit Goes Full Bihari — But Is It Spicy Enough to Satisfy?

Three women. One body. Zero chill neighbours. On paper, Maa Behen sounds like the darkly comic thriller Netflix India desperately needed. But does director Suresh Triveni’s woman-led mystery actually deliver? Let’s find out.

Maa Behen Review

What’s the Story?

A femme fatale, her two offspring, and a tale of remains in a Bihari household form the outline of Suresh Triveni’s OTT directorial. The mother and daughters must bury the misdeed without the neighbours getting a whiff of it. Whether they pull it off — or spectacularly don’t — is what makes you stay.

What Works

Suresh Triveni’s direction is subtle rather than in-your-face, forcing you to dive deep into even the minutest shots. Contrary to the traditionally dull colour palette used to depict Bihar on screen, Maa Behen is quite colourful. The casting perfectly justifies the characters, and there are several underlying messages left for viewers to comprehend.

The performances carry the film on their backs. Madhuri Dixit plays Rekha, a single mother navigating society’s lecherous lens — her first Bihari character, handled with grace. Triptii Dimri is highly believable as Jaya, completely soaking herself in the character. Dharna Durga, as Sushma, is the absolute heart of Maa Behen and proves she is here to stay.

What Doesn’t

The pace of the film is painfully slow at first. Interest only picks up in the second half. The screenplay gets scattered in places, the songs are forgettable, and the background score fails to act as a strong supporting element — something essential for a comedy-thriller. The flavour of the genre feels too mild rather than power-packed.

Final Verdict

The three leading women — especially the breakout Dharna Durga — make Maa Behen worth at least one watch. It’s not the tight, darkly funny thriller it could have been, but there’s genuine heart buried in its colourful Bihar setting. It’s a decent, one-time watch for a lazy Sunday.
