LVL Zero, India’s first-of-its-kind gaming incubator backed by MIXI Global Investments, Nazara Technologies, and Chimera VC, has received over 240 applications for its inaugural cohort — a number that tells a compelling story about where Indian game development is headed.
What the Numbers Reveal About India’s Gaming Ecosystem
The applications paint a vivid picture of a startup ecosystem in rapid formation, with studios building for PC, console, mobile, and gaming infrastructure simultaneously.
| Trend | Data |
|---|---|
| Studios founded in 2025 | 46.9% |
| Studios founded 2024 or later | 66.8% |
| Median team size | 3–4 members |
| At prototype stage | 46.9% |
| Targeting PC platforms | 58.5% |
| Targeting console platforms | 36.1% |
| Referencing AI/ML in product | 22.8% |
| Using live-ops/retention frameworks | 30%+ |
| Indian cultural themes in games | 36% |

Key Trends Worth Noting
The most striking insight is the shift toward PC and console — traditionally underserved categories in India’s mobile-dominant gaming market. However, the data also reveals that mobile-first studios still ship faster, with roughly 25% of mobile-only teams already having live products, significantly higher than PC and console teams.
Cultural IP is also emerging as a genuine global opportunity. About 36% of applications referenced Indian mythology, folklore, or cultural narratives, with most of these projects targeting PC and console platforms for international audiences — not just local ones. This signals a meaningful shift from utility-first mobile gaming toward premium, narrative-driven experiences rooted in Indian identity.
AI adoption is becoming standard, not experimental. Among gaming infrastructure startups specifically, roughly half referenced AI-driven solutions across player analytics, personalisation, growth automation, and retention modelling.
