Luis de la Fuente is closing in on a new contract extension with Spain’s football federation that would keep him in charge as head coach through the 2030 World Cup, according to multiple reports. The 65-year-old’s current deal runs until 2028, but talks over an extension have accelerated following Spain’s triumph at this summer’s World Cup.
Why the RFEF Is Moving to Extend His Stay
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has formally opened talks with De la Fuente following Spain’s extra-time win over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, a result that saw the country hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at the same time. His current contract had been due to run only until the end of Euro 2028, but the federation is now working to extend that through to the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host alongside Portugal and Morocco.
Talks between the RFEF and De la Fuente’s agent, Álvaro Torres, are reported to have been ongoing for around two months and are said to be nearing a formal conclusion, though as of the most recent reports, the deal had not yet been officially signed.

What’s Being Offered
According to reports, the new deal is expected to include improved financial terms compared to his current contract, alongside the possibility of extending his stay even further beyond the 2030 tournament. His core coaching staff are also expected to remain in place through 2030, offering continuity after the federation saw assistant coach Pablo Amo depart following Euro 2024.
RFEF president Rafael Louzán has been vocal in backing the extension, telling Radio Nacional de España that keeping De la Fuente is something he has earned, and that the federation is actively working to extend his stay beyond 2028 toward the 2030 tournament. Louzán also described De la Fuente as the best coach in Spain’s history, pointing to the results as proof, while confirming that the federation is in the process of finalising the agreement to keep him on for a few more years.
A Golden Era for Spanish Football
De la Fuente has overseen one of the most successful periods in Spanish football history since taking charge of the senior side in December 2022. His tenure already includes the 2023 UEFA Nations League title, Euro 2024 following a final win over England, and this summer’s World Cup triumph over Argentina at New York New Jersey Stadium. His deep ties to the federation, including nearly a decade coaching Spain’s youth national teams before his senior appointment, have also been cited as part of the reasoning behind the federation’s push to secure his long-term future.
What’s Next
With his future increasingly secure, De la Fuente and his squad are now able to turn their focus back to the pitch. Spain’s next fixture comes on 26 September, when they face England in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League.
