Some remakes take bold creative risks. This one takes a scenic boat trip along the exact same route — and the view is stunning, even if the destination never changes. Disney’s live-action “Moana” has sailed into theaters, and early reviews are calling it beautiful but overly familiar.
Moana Story Stays Right On Course
Directed by Thomas Kail, the film follows the fearless daughter of Motunui as she voyages across the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save her people from a curse. Guided by her grandmother’s wisdom, she teams up with the overconfident demigod Maui along the way — the same emotional beats, courage, and family themes that defined the 2016 animated original.
What The Review Says
| Category | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Visuals | Vibrant, tropical, Polynesian-inspired spectacle |
| Story | Nearly identical to the 2016 animated film |
| Catherine Laga’aia (Moana) | Confident, emotionally sincere, makes the role her own |
| Dwayne Johnson (Maui) | Energetic, strong chemistry with lead |
| Rena Owen (Grandma Tala) | Adds warmth and wisdom |
| Overall Rating | 2.5/5 |
Strong Performances, Familiar Ground
The review praises Catherine Laga’aia for capturing Moana’s determination and quiet resilience with real emotional weight, while Dwayne Johnson brings his usual charisma back to Maui, giving the film much of its warmth and humor. Rena Owen’s Grandma Tala adds further emotional depth to the family-friendly adventure.
Where the film stumbles is originality. Nearly every major scene mirrors its animated counterpart beat for beat, leaving little space for reinterpretation. Despite the polish, the movie rarely explains why this live-action version needed to exist beyond retelling the same story with real actors and upgraded visual effects.
This tension between honoring a beloved original and justifying a new version is one every studio faces with reboots — a challenge Disney itself, per the broader history of the Walt Disney Company, has navigated repeatedly across its live-action remake era.

Conclusion
“Moana” delivers gorgeous visuals, heartfelt performances, and a story that still tugs at the heartstrings — but fans hoping for something new may leave feeling like they’ve already seen this voyage before.
