Lewandowski becomes the second-highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga; comparison with Gerd Muller

Robert Lewandowski is the greatest number 9 of his generation, and there is no argument about it anymore. The Polish international became the second-highest goalscorer in Bundesliga history as he scored a perfect first-half hat-trick in Bayern’s most recent outing against Stuttgart, which they won 4-0.

The circumstances under which Lewandowski netted three make it an even more exceptional achievement. Alphonso Davies was sent off within the first 15 minutes, and Lewandowski took it upon himself to make up for in offense what the team lost at the back.

The 32-year-old now has 271 goals in the Bundesliga, while Gerd Muller still holds the all-time top goalscorer record with 365 to his name. Muller achieved the feat in 427 games for Bayern Munich, while Lewandowski, at 271, has played 346 and has a lower minutes per goal ratio, with 102 compared to Muller’s 105.

Moreover, Lewandowski has now scored a mind-blowing 35 league goals in 25 games for Bayern Munich this season. Gerd Muller also holds the record for the most number of goals in a single season in the Bundesliga, with 40. It is only a matter of time before the Polish striker takes over this record with an even bigger margin than what was set before since there are still eight games left to play.

While it might be too early to call it, Lewandowski also looks set for the Ballon d’Or award this season. He was the clear favorite last year, but the award got canceled. It would be a robbery to not see the Bayern Munich star with the Golden Ball at the end of the year.
