An Emotional Start

How the Game Unfolded?

The first half was lively without being decisive. Messi was the busiest man in blue and white, getting a couple of sights of goal, but Benin defended with real discipline and kept the game within reach. The stadium had a soundtrack for the occasion too, with the band Los Fundamentalistas performing live at the interval. Outlook India

Argentina broke through to lead 1-0, and Messi was involved, with an assist to his name. The home side then kept the pressure on, and the stats show how one-sided it became: Argentina had 65% possession, 19 shots against Benin’s seven, and 12 shots on target to just two.

The Goal Everyone Wanted

The fairy-tale moment arrived in the 68th minute. Messi grabbed the ball, placed it on the penalty spot and calmly slotted it home for Argentina’s third goal of the night and his 126th for the national team. It may have come from the spot, but he had been probing all evening with shots from distance and clever runs behind the defence. The final tally for the night read one goal and two assists, a fitting farewell line for a player who has spent two decades creating moments like these. World Soccer Talk
