Lee Min Ho’s New Film “Assassins” Turns Him Into a Rookie Journalist Chasing a Political Cover-Up

Lee Min Ho is trading rom-com charm for gritty investigative drama in his upcoming film Assassins, and the newly released first-look stills already hint at a much more intense, high-stakes role than fans are used to seeing from him.

Assassins: Overview

What’s the Plot?

Assassins centers on the investigation into the mystery and forces behind a shocking August 15 shooting incident that rattled South Korea. It’s a story rooted in political conspiracy and cover-ups, unfolding through the eyes of a journalist determined to expose the truth no matter the cost.

Meet Young Il: Lee Min Ho’s Rookie Journalist

Lee Min Ho plays Young Il, a rookie reporter working for the fictional Dongseong Ilbo newspaper. While covering a Liberation Day ceremony, Young Il finds himself at the center of chaos, witnessing an attempted assassination targeting the first lady, along with harm to innocent bystanders, from frighteningly close range.

Rather than retreating from the horror of what he’s seen, Young Il throws himself headfirst into uncovering what really happened — setting up a tense, high-stakes investigation that drives the entire film.

What the First-Look Stills Reveal

The newly released images capture Young Il in full pursuit mode. In one still, he appears with sleeves rolled up and a serious, contemplative expression, clearly deep in thought as he processes the weight of what he’s chasing. In another, he’s shown retracing clues with a sharp, focused gaze during a press conference — every bit the relentless rookie journalist unwilling to let the story go cold.

Why This Role Feels Different for Lee Min Ho

Known widely for his romantic leads and charismatic on-screen presence, Lee Min Ho stepping into the role of a journalist entangled in a political assassination plot marks a notable shift in tone. The stills alone suggest a more grounded, intense performance, driven by moral urgency rather than charm.

When Can You Watch?

Assassins is scheduled to premiere in September 2026. While fans wait for more details, they can revisit Lee Min Ho’s beloved earlier work in “The Legend of the Blue Sea” to tide themselves over.
