Last Seen Review: Patrick Brammall Anchors a Gripping, Imperfect Apple TV Mystery

Grief, obsession, and one desperate phone call — Last Seen wastes no time pulling viewers into its emotional core. The new Australian thriller premiered on Apple TV on September 9, 2026, and critics agree it lives or dies on the strength of Patrick Brammall’s raw, career-showcasing performance.

What Last Seen Is About?

The six-episode series follows Ian Ridley (Brammall), a former police detective turned dispatcher whose life fell apart 11 years ago when his young daughter Maggie disappeared without a trace. Ian’s fragile stability shatters when he receives a distress call from a teenage girl he becomes convinced is Maggie, sending him on an increasingly desperate and dangerous search to uncover the truth.

What Critics Are Saying

Reviews have been notably split but largely positive. The Guardian awarded the series a full five stars, calling it one of the standout shows of the year, while RogerEbert.com praised it for doing many things right that other thrillers don’t even attempt. The Hollywood Reporter offered a more mixed take, calling the series fast-moving and surprising but flagging plot holes and contrivances that strain credibility. Across the board, though, Brammall’s performance draws consistent praise, with critics noting he brings a raw, desperate energy that makes Ian’s obsession genuinely compelling rather than melodramatic. The supporting cast, including Maxine Peake, Brendan Cowell, and Daniel Henshall, adds further layers of secrets and misdirection as the investigation deepens.
