is central here. The intense scrutiny surrounding Mbappé has reached a breaking point, with public opinion turning as the star faces growing criticism over his commitment. Professional athletes deal with pressure all the time, but what we’re seeing now suggests a deeper psychological toll affecting both his recovery and his reputation at Real Madrid. Mbappe deserves more nuance than the headlines give him.

Mbappe: Performance and Fan Discontent at Real Madrid

The tension between the forward and supporters is real. Unhappy fans believe he’s saving himself for the upcoming World Cup, which has only fueled frustration over what they see as lack of effort during recent losses. His recent trip to Italy with actress Ester Expósito during injury recovery didn’t help matters.

Mbappe plays a bigger role in this story than most coverage suggests.

Not everyone buys into the harsh criticism. His representatives pushed back: “Part of the criticism is based on an overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club.” The damage to his image, though, is already done. The reality is more complicated than what you’ll read in the headlines.

This points to a real gap between what fans expect and how modern football star management actually works. Comparing him to legends? That’s brutal. Spanish journalist Guillem Balague said on Onda Cero: “Cristiano would have spent eight hours with the physios trying to make it to the Clásico, and Mbappé no.” That’s the kind of standard set for icons at the Bernabéu.

When Kylian Mbappé suffers setbacks, reactions tend to be anything but measured—they often reflect wider frustrations with how the team’s performing.

Injury Status and the El Clásico Absence

Right now, the main issue is his left hamstring injury, which has him sidelined heading into Sunday’s crucial El Clásico in Barcelona. Since he left PSG, the narrative shifted dramatically. Fans actually posted, “Thank you for leaving PSG, you were the problem,” after the club reached the Champions League final without him.

For anyone following mbappe’s situation, this detail matters.

The psychological weight here is impossible to ignore. His absence from the pitch is being read by many as a lack of desire. This is a critical moment for his reputation.

If he can’t get back to his best, the idea that he’s a luxury the team can’t afford will only grow louder. Worth noting: if you’re curious about how PSG attackers have shifted since his departure, the tactical change is striking.
