KRAFTON Just Opened The Door For India’s Next Big Game Studios — Here’s What’s New

India’s indie game developers just got a bigger reason to pay attention. KRAFTON India has launched Cohort 4 of its Gaming Incubator (KIGI), and this round comes with a meaningful shift: for the first time, the program isn’t just backing early-stage ideas — it’s now supporting games that are already live, in beta, or drawing traction on Steam.

Launched in 2023, KIGI has quietly become one of the most important launchpads for Indian game studios, offering funding, mentorship, and access to global platforms. Cohort 4 widens that net considerably, while still keeping its original door open to first-time teams with nothing but an idea.

What’s New in KRAFTON KIGI Cohort 4?

Why This Expansion Matters?

Most incubators pick a lane — either back raw ideas or invest in proven traction. KIGI is now doing both deliberately. Anuj Sahani, Head of KRAFTON India’s Incubator Program, framed the shift as meeting developers “where they are” — whether that’s a mobile title already showing early momentum or a PC game just beginning to build a community around a Steam demo.

KRAFTON India CEO Sean Hyunil Sohn tied the move to a bigger vision: positioning India as a genuine global creative force in gaming, not just a market that consumes titles made elsewhere. Given that KIGI Cohort 2 already produced Frontier Paladin — a Mumbai-built game that made it to Steam — the program has real proof points backing that ambition.

This isn’t KRAFTON’s first major bet on India’s gaming ecosystem either. The company previously committed $150 million toward India’s gaming and tech landscape, and KIGI functions as one of the more hands-on pieces of that broader strategy — pairing capital with mentorship rather than just writing checks.

For developers, the timing is notable: Cohort 3 pulled in roughly 1,000 applications for just four spots, so Cohort 4’s expanded scope could open the door a little wider for studios that previously felt “too early” or “too far along” to qualify.

KRAFTON, the South Korean gaming company behind PUBG and BGMI, has increasingly used India as a testbed for homegrown development talent — and KIGI is the clearest expression of that strategy yet.
