What Made Kingdom a K-Drama Icon?

Set in Korea’s Joseon dynasty, Kingdom redefined what a zombie drama could be — blending political intrigue, class inequality, and raw survival horror into one breathtaking package. First arriving on Netflix in 2019, the horror series quickly became one of the most popular non-English titles on the platform, long before Squid Game made Korean content a global phenomenon. It was, quite simply, ahead of its time.

So Is Kingdom Season 3 Happening?

This is the question every fan has been asking — and the honest answer is: probably not. Over two years passed since the special episode Ashin of the North, and over three years since Season 2 — with no word from Netflix, suggesting the series has been quietly shelved.

When Ashin of the North is placed alongside other K-drama titles on Netflix, it can be categorized as a significant underperformer in terms of viewership hours — which likely played a major role in Netflix’s decision not to move forward.

That said, showrunner Kim Eun-hee has never given up hope. She previously stated her vision was bold: “Kingdom is a series that gives me more energy the more I write it. If viewers allow, I would love to see it develop even up to season 10.” She also teased Season 3’s theme, saying she wanted it to explore the story of resentment, with the narrative moving north into a new and dangerous ecosystem.

What Would Season 3 Have Explored?

Season 3 was expected to follow Prince Chang and Seobi investigating a new zombie outbreak in an abandoned northern village, while a mysterious woman — revealed to be spreading the resurrection plant — becomes the central antagonist. Jun Ji-Hyun, who appeared in Kingdom’s iconic Season 2 finale, was confirmed to play a central role alongside returning leads.

Where Is the Cast Now?

Ju Ji-Hoon (Prince Chang) has moved on to films and dramas including Project Silence and The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call. Bae Doo-Na (Seo-Bi) starred in The Silent Sea and Stranger Season 2 on Netflix. Jun Ji-Hyun (Ashin) is set to star in the upcoming drama Polaris. With schedules this packed, coordinating a Kingdom reunion grows more unlikely with every passing year.
