Some records were always going to belong to just one person. On the night of March 28, 2026, at a roaring M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli wrote yet another chapter that no one else will ever write.
The Indian stalwart became the first batter in IPL history to cross 4,000 runs in run chases, achieving the historic milestone during the IPL 2026 season opener between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
And just to make sure one record wasn’t enough for the night — Kohli also surpassed former Pakistan batter Shoaib Malik to become the sixth-highest run-getter in T20 cricket across all formats. Malik had accumulated 13,571 runs across 557 matches at an average of 35.99.

How the Night Unfolded
Sunrisers Hyderabad staged a strong recovery from an early collapse — losing Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Nitish Reddy in the powerplay — to post 201/9 in 20 overs. Ishan Kishan hammered 80 off 38 balls, with Aniket Verma smashing a blistering 43 off just 18 deliveries. For RCB, Jacob Duffy and Romario Shepherd claimed three wickets apiece.
In response, Impact sub Devdutt Padikkal came out blazing with 61 off 26 balls, before skipper Rajat Patidar chipped in with a 12-ball 31. Kohli then anchored the chase to perfection — unbeaten on 69 off 38 — as Bengaluru completed the highest successful IPL run chase of 200-plus in just 15.4 overs, the fastest in IPL history.
Why This Record Matters
Chasing is cricket’s ultimate pressure cooker. Doing it consistently, at the highest level, across 18 seasons of the IPL — and becoming the first person ever to rack up 4,000 runs in precisely those conditions — tells you everything about Kohli’s character and composure under fire.
