Kattalan Review Roundup: Is Antony Varghese Pepe’s Action Thriller Worth Watching in Theatres?

Kattalan hit theatres on May 28, 2026, and the Malayalam action thriller from debutant director Paul George has been generating serious buzz online. Set in the same cinematic universe as Marco, the film has Antony Varghese Pepe front and centre — and audiences are already splitting into camps.

Kattalan Film Overview

What the Film Is About

Kattalan revolves around a man who finds himself caught between relentless greed and the untamed wilderness. Co-written and directed by Paul George, the film features music and background score from the acclaimed duo of Ravi Basrur and B. Ajaneesh Loknath. The supporting cast includes Sunil, Kabir Duhan Singh, Parth Tiwari, Jagadish, Dushara Vijayan, Siddique, Raj Tirandasu, Shon Joy, and Anson Paul.

What Audiences Are Saying

The early verdict from X (formerly Twitter) is largely enthusiastic, though not without dissent.

One user described it as an extreme-level peak commercial entertainer, saying the film felt like an absolute firecracker from the very beginning and praised the first half, interval block, second half, and climax individually. They were particularly stunned by Antony Varghese Pepe’s performance, noting that even though his range in action films was well established, this one completely shocked them — with every punch landing hard and the action choreography operating on another level.

Another reviewer called it an engaging, action-packed theatrical entertainer that pulls viewers in immediately, rated it 4 out of 5, and highlighted that the visuals, background score, and action sequences came together to create an immersive big-screen experience.

However, not everyone was on board. One viewer flatly called it a headache-inducing and terrible experience, sarcastically advising that only those with enough time and money to spare should watch it.

The overall mood? Mostly positive, with high praise for the action and Pepe’s performance, and a minority pushing back against the film’s intensity.

Should You Watch It?

If you enjoyed Marco and are in the mood for a high-octane action ride with punishing set pieces and a raw central performance, Kattalan appears to deliver exactly that. Go in with the right expectations — this is unabashedly commercial mass entertainment, not a slow burn.
