Karim Benzema Day is here: 2022 Ballon d’Or, new Real Madrid contract and more

Karim Benzema was arguably the standout performer of the 21/22 season, helping Real Madrid win not only the La Liga, but also the Champions League for the 14th time.

The French striker scored consecutive hat-tricks in the knockout stages against Chelsea and PSG to help the team advance to the finals. And he also finished as the player of the tournament in the end.

In 46 games across all competitions, he netted 44 times and also provided 15 assists, forming a very productive partnership with Vinicius Jr as well.

The format of the Ballon d’Or award has changed, with the football season from summer to summer being considered only. And Karim Benzema, by a large margin, will be the first winner of the prestigious award in its new format.

He has also agreed a new deal with Real Madrid, as his current deal runs out at the end of the 22/23 season. The extension will be of one year, until the end of the 23/24 campaign. And it will be announced following the award ceremony today.
