What happens when Korea’s “Prince of Asia” trades his crown for a cooking apron? Drama magic — and possibly the most wholesome K-drama premise of 2026. Jang Keun Suk is making his long-awaited small-screen return, and now Lee El is joining the cast to make it even better.
What Is “Hyupban” All About?
“Hyupban” tells the story of Ma Han Sang, a gangster with exceptional cooking skills, who ends up hiding in a college student’s home after saving them from danger. The drama is a healing story in which the characters offer each other comfort and support through warm, home-cooked meals. The drama is based on a Japanese novel, which was previously adapted into a drama in Japan in 2016.
A tough gangster finding solace through home cooking? That’s the kind of slow-burn warmth K-drama fans absolutely live for.

Why This Casting Excites Fans
On April 2, Ilgan Sports reported that Lee El has finalized her decision to appear in the drama and is currently coordinating the details. Her agency KeyEast Company stated, “She is positively reviewing the offer.” Lee El has reportedly been offered the role of the mother in a three-generation household — grandmother, mother, and daughter — who owns the home where Ma Han Sang hides.
A three-generation household anchored by Lee El’s warm screen presence, with Jang Keun Suk as the unexpected gangster guest — the dynamic writes itself beautifully.
Jang Keun Suk has previously starred in numerous hits including “You’re Beautiful,” “Love Rain,” “Bel Ami,” and more. If Jang Keun Suk accepts the role, this will mark his first drama in three years since “Decoy.”
Three years is a long time in K-drama — fans are hungry for his return, and this gentler, more heartfelt project feels like exactly the right vehicle.
According to Wikipedia’s entry on Jang Keun-suk, the actor has been a beloved star in Korean and pan-Asian entertainment since his breakout in You’re Beautiful (2009), earning him a devoted global fanbase known as “Eels.”
