“I Made That Mistake With Ek Din”
The project was initially supposed to move quickly under filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra after Maharaj. However, once Aamir heard the narration, he became emotionally invested and decided to produce it himself.
“I thought, shall I have a second opinion from dad? I really like it, but maybe I should get a second opinion,” Junaid recalled. “So I set up a narration. And so when the narration happened, Dad really loved it. And he was like, ‘Siddharth, let me produce it.’ Suddenly, he was like, ‘I want to make it. I’m finally getting a chance to make a film for my son; everyone is making a film for him.’ It was a rather emotional decision.”
The result? A film that took far longer than expected to reach theatres — and ultimately underperformed.
One Film in Five Years Is Not Enough
Junaid is not criticising Aamir’s passion — he is critiquing the pace. “Papa is a fantastic producer, but what ends up happening is that it takes 5 years to make it. So then I realised that if I take it to dad, he will be like I will produce it and then I will have one film in 5 years. Which is great for him, but I am just starting.”
He added that Aamir is now “dying to make another film” with him, to which Junaid jokingly responded: “In a bit.” It is affectionate, funny — and entirely fair.
How Aamir Is Taking the Failure
Junaid shared how deeply Aamir gets emotionally attached to his productions. “He is still hopeful. Yeah, even after all these years, after seeing everything, it still really bothers him. But he keeps himself busy and gets back to it, and goes back out there and does it all over again.”
Junaid himself was measured in his assessment of the film’s failure: “We were hopeful. But I guess… It didn’t do well. It happens sometimes.”
