John Stewart’s “Dark Lantern” Revealed: The Cracked, Fear-Laced Battery From the Lanterns Finale

Every Green Lantern needs a battery, but John Stewart’s isn’t a standard-issue one. New concept art gives the clearest look at the Dark Lantern, the strange power battery that makes him an unsanctioned hero. For more DC news, follow TechnoSports.

The Dark Lantern: Overview

What the Finale Showed?

According to The Direct, Sinestro forged the battery on a planet where fear saturates the environment. It was meant to recharge Hal Jordan’s ring. At the end, John claims it, becoming an unsanctioned Green Lantern of Earth, while Guy Gardner guards a cosmic section of Sector 2814.

A Closer Look at the Design

Concept artist Ed Natividad shared the name and detailed images. The battery is hourglass-shaped, with a brass carrying handle and a bronze central ring port. Green energy glows through a cracked, dark casing shot with seemingly yellow veins. It looks nothing like a polished Corps battery.

Why the Name Matters?

“Dark” sounds sinister, and the yellow veins suggest fear leaking into the willpower. The Direct argues this could become a challenge in future stories. But it also frees John from the Guardians, who can’t take back a battery they didn’t forge.

Can John Control It?

This part is the outlet’s interpretation. John’s new oath, which acknowledges fear rather than ignoring it, might keep the cracks from widening. Naming fear and still choosing to fight could, in theory, stop him from sliding toward the Yellow Lantern path. The finale never showed John building a construct, so how this battery behaves is still unknown.

What It Means for the DCU?

Unlike Hal, who lived as the Corps’ star, John gets to build his own identity. For background on the larger organization, see the Green Lantern Corps on Wikipedia, and read more about the lead actor on Aaron Pierre’s Wikipedia page. For more, browse our latest DC coverage.
