James Gunn Defends Batman 2 Delay, New Release Date Set

Batman 2: In an explanation to the Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn defended the move and said delaying sequels is a common course of action. Gunn referenced several big film franchises that took significant time between sequels, such as Alien, Incredibles, Terminator, Avatar, Top Gun, and Guardians of the Galaxy. He pointed out that such delays are not unusual in the industry, and that they can come from the complicated nature of scriptwriting and production.

James Gunn Defends Batman 2 Delay, Announces New Release Date for October 2027

New Release Date Set for Batman 2 in 2027

Warner Bros. recently announced a revised release date for Batman 2, which has been postponed by one year. The rescheduled release date is now October 1, 2027 — a major move from its previously scheduled release window. The delay, according to Gunn, aligns with the usual turnaround time for big blockbuster sequels, where long gaps between films are not uncommon.

James Gunn Explains the Reason Behind the Delay

Gunn went on to say that it took so long primarily because the script was not ready as yet. The writing process often takes some time, and the writer explained that it is simply impossible to define how long it will take to finish writing the script. For big films such as Batman 2, there are usually two years from the finalization of the script to pre-production and filming, to post-production. The time is important so that the movie can live up to the necessarily high expectations of both the studio and the audience.

Release Date for Batman 2 Filled by Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Project

With the upcoming movie now pushed back, Warner Bros. has slotted in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s untitled project, featuring Tom Cruise, to fill the now-wary release date. This marks a reshuffling of Warner Bros.’ release schedule. Meanwhile, the studio has already experienced great success with the 2022 The Batman, which performed well both domestically and internationally. The film grossed USD 369.3 million domestically and USD 772 million globally, continuing the Batman Universe, including spin-off series like the Penguin series.

Warner Bros. Reschedules Upcoming Release Slate

Warner Bros. has also shuffled a few things on its upcoming slate. The release date for Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson, was moved up from May 1 to March 7, 2025. Sinners, which is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan, will now be released on April 18, 2025. These changes are part of the studio’s continued adaptations to accommodate different production timelines.
