Some records stand for years. This one stood for eight. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has just crossed the Rs 500 crore mark in India, and in doing so has edged past 2.0 to become the highest-grossing Tamil film in the country. The margin is tiny, but the symbolism is huge.
Jailer 2: The Record
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Film | Jailer 2 |
| Star | Rajinikanth |
| India gross (approx.) | Rs 508.50 crore |
| Previous record holder | 2.0 (Rs 508 crore) |
| Third Sunday collection | About Rs 11.75 crore |
| Worldwide gross (as of Nov 1) | About Rs 774 crore |
How Close Was the Race?
Very close. Jailer 2 sits at Rs 508.50 crore against 2.0’s Rs 508 crore, a gap of just half a crore. The film added around Rs 11.75 crore on its third Sunday to get there. For more on the superstar behind it all, see the Wikipedia page on Rajinikanth.
The Catch: 2.0’s 3D Revenue
There’s an important footnote. 2.0 also released in 3D, which brought in an estimated Rs 30 to 35 crore in extra 3D charges, and those aren’t included in its reported figure. If the industry ever starts counting 3D charges in official numbers, 2.0 could regain the top spot in a retrospective revision. The only way Jailer 2 avoids that is by building a bigger cushion before its run ends, and the Diwali holidays will matter a lot.

What’s Next for Jailer 2?
- Tamil Nadu milestone: The film is closing in on Rs 200 crore in the state and could cross it today or tomorrow.
- Worldwide target: It’s nearing the Rs 800 crore mark globally, though getting there will be a close call.
- Diwali boost: The holiday period could decide how far the film stretches its lead.
Conclusion
Whichever way the 3D debate goes, Jailer 2 has proven that Rajinikanth’s pull remains massive. Having both Jailer films in the top four shows how well this franchise connects with audiences.
