Is Jana Nayagan a Bhagavanth Kesari Remake? Director H. Vinoth Finally Sets the Record Straight

With Thalapathy Vijay‘s swansong film just days away from release, director H. Vinoth has addressed the one question fans keep asking — how much of Jana Nayagan is really borrowed from Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari?

Jana Nayagan: Overview

How Much Is Actually Borrowed?

According to Vinoth, the influence isn’t uniform across the film. He revealed that the first half carries a significant overlap with Bhagavanth Kesari, while the second half diverges considerably, taking the story in a largely original direction. Overall, the director estimated the film’s connection to the Telugu original at roughly half its content.

Why Vinoth Took On the Project

The director shared that his decision to work on Vijay’s final film stemmed largely from admiration for the actor’s commitment to themes of women’s empowerment, a quality he says he’d previously observed while working with Ajith Kumar on a different remake. For Vinoth, that shared conviction made the opportunity impossible to pass up.

The Story Behind the Adaptation

Interestingly, Vinoth revealed that his original pitch to Vijay had nothing to do with Bhagavanth Kesari at all — it centered on a completely different concept involving two rival masterminds. Vijay turned that idea down and instead suggested adapting the Balakrishna starrer, setting the project on its current path. Vinoth also confirmed he’s reworked several elements to shift the film’s tone away from its NBK-style origins and toward something better suited to Vijay’s screen persona.

What Jana Nayagan Is About

The film follows Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a former official raising his adopted daughter Viji to be strong and independent, encouraging her to join the forces despite her fear of violence. As the story unfolds, a looming national threat pulls him into a crisis that intertwines with a deeply personal vendetta.
