iPhone 17 Pro to Retain Titanium Frame, Disputing Aluminum Claims

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will apparently stick with titanium frames, with some conflicting reports have previously suggested that Apple would return to using aluminum in its 2025 iPhone lineup.

These reports have been met with scepticism by one Weibo leaker, “Instant Digit,” who says that it would be illogical for Apple to return to aluminium when premium materials like titanium for the Pro models have been one of its various selling points. They note that Apple’s marketing has long played up premium frame materials, including the “surgical-grade stainless steel” and titanium of the current models.

Previously, one report from The Information by Wayne Ma claimed that Apple may bring back aluminum as the material used around the frame of newer Pro iPhones. The aluminum switch would come with a redesign — with aluminum for the upper back and a new rectangular camera bump while leaving a lower glass section to retain wireless charging, according to this report.

The Weibo leaker’s claims have not been independently verified but they have a following among some Apple rumor enthusiasts even though the accuracy record for the leaker is mixed. One example is the fact that Instant Digital accurately predicted the 2023 launch of the Yellow iPhone 14 along with other features, adding some credibility to what they say.

The shift from stainless steel to titanium was billed as a big upgrade for the new iPhone 15 Pro, but Apple has a track record of changing or deleting major features with subsequent iterations — like when 3D Touch went the way of the swipe with the introduction of iPhone 11. So while the Weibo person’s claim could be legit, we still don’t know whether aluminum will switch or not. The iPhone 17 series is due later in the fall and is predicted to include changed display sizes and perhaps some other design alterations — with the likelihood of ProMotion displays included in all models.
