iOS 18’s New Battery Feature: Identify Slow Chargers Easily

Apple’s latest update, iOS 18, brings an innovative feature to the Battery section of the Settings app, allowing users to see if their iPhone has been charged with a “slow” charger. This new functionality can help you understand charging issues and optimize your device’s performance.

iOS 18’s New Battery Feature: How It Works?

When you charge your iPhone with a slow charger, iOS 18 highlights these periods with an orange bar in the Battery settings. You can view this information under battery usage and charging data over the past 24 hours or the past 10 days.

Identifying Slow Chargers

We observed the slow charging notification after using a 5W wireless charger, similar to what a Redditor reported. While it’s not entirely clear what Apple categorizes as “slow,” this feature is beneficial for users experiencing prolonged charging times without knowing the cause.

Many wireless chargers advertise themselves as MagSafe-compatible but actually operate at Qi speeds or slower. This can be frustrating for users expecting faster charging. The new feature helps by shedding light on why your device may not be charging as quickly as expected.

Potential Improvements

Currently, iOS 18 does not offer an alert system for when your iPhone charges slowly. Such a feature could be more convenient, given that the Battery settings are somewhat hidden. Additionally, an information button accompanies the slow charging notices but it currently links to a support document that isn’t available yet.

Why This Matters

Understanding your iPhone’s charging performance is crucial for maintaining battery health and ensuring efficient device usage. With iOS 18’s new Battery section feature, Apple provides valuable insights that can help users identify and rectify charging inefficiencies.
