Instagram Rolls Out College & University Profile Feature: What It Means for Students in 2025

Instagram has launched a highly anticipated update: users can now add their college or university to their profile in the US, making it easier than ever to connect with classmates, find friends on campus, or even spot alumni from specific years. This game-changing social feature borrows a page from Facebook’s early playbook and aims to create vibrant, campus-centric communities directly on Instagram.

Quick Facts – Instagram College Profile Feature

How Does It Work?

• Verification: To add a school, users verify student status via UNiDAYS. Once verified, a school banner appears on the profile page.
• Community Building: Users gain access to a directory of fellow students, making it easy to discover and connect with others from the same institution or even sort by class year.
• Competitive Edge: Instagram’s move follows a similar rollout by TikTok, showing that student life and campus networking are the new battlegrounds for social apps.

Why Is This Feature Significant?

• Freshers & Alumni: New students can find friends even before they set foot on campus, while alumni can stay networked with their batchmates and juniors.
• Campus Life Online: Organizing events, sharing campus moments, and building communities are now much more fluid on Instagram.
• Privacy Note: While exciting, users are advised to review privacy settings and share school info thoughtfully, as such features can be double-edged when it comes to personal information.
