Indian esports: Analyzing the Competitive Landscape in VCT Pacific

Valorant, developed by Riot Games and launched on June 2, 2020, has exploded in popularity in the tactical shooter genre. The game features a 5v5 format that combines precise gunplay with unique character abilities. This requires high-level coordination and strategic depth, as outlined in recent coverage by The Verge.

By 2024, the game reportedly boasted over 22 million monthly active players worldwide, solidifying its status as a key player in modern competitive gaming.

India currently competes under the Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) Pacific regional league structure, a shift introduced during the 2023 competitive season. This change has thrust Indian talent into one of the toughest ecosystems on the global stage.

Organizations like Global Esports have played a crucial role in this transition, consistently fielding teams that challenge established giants in the Pacific circuit.

The Impact on the Indian Esports Federation

The idea of an Indian team standing at the top of a global podium could be a game-changing moment for the domestic scene. Such a win would validate years of investment from the Indian Esports Federation and various organizations working to elevate local players to international stages, according to recent insights from TechCrunch.

While the PUBG scene has traditionally attracted massive viewership, a breakthrough in Valorant could signal a shift toward tactical, ability-based titles gaining traction worldwide.

The key question is how quickly the regional infrastructure can adapt to sustain this momentum. With the VCT Champions event—the annual world championship—typically held later in the year, everyone is watching the upcoming qualifying circuits to see if this reported performance sets a new standard for the model.
