Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 match: India defeats West Indies by 6 wickets

The Indian women’s cricket team secured their second victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 by beating the West Indies by 6 wickets. The match was held on February 15, 2023, at the Newlands in Cape Town. This win will boost India’s chances of making it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Indian women cricket team has started the Women’s T20 World Cup with two consecutive wins after beating West Indies in their second match of the tournament. The West Indies won the toss and elected to bat, but Indian bowlers put up a disciplined performance to restrict them to 118 for six in 20 overs.

Deepti Sharma was the most successful bowler for India, taking three wickets for 15 runs, while Pooja Vastrakar and Renuka Singh took one apiece. India had a rocky start as they lost their top three batters within the first seven overs but then the duo of Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh came together and added a match-winning fifty runs for the fifth wicket. India won the match by six wickets.

Here’s a recap of the India vs West Indies Women’s T20 World Cup match:

  1. Toss and first innings: West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews won the toss and elected to bat. However, the team struggled to build a solid partnership, losing some initial wickets. Stafanie Taylor, however, played a good innings of 42 off 40 balls. The team was restricted at 118/6, thanks to Deepti Sharma’s three-wicket haul.
  2. India’s innings: India started their run chase strong, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana scoring 28 runs in the first two overs from the pacers. However, the team found it difficult to score once the spinners came into play. Mandhana was dismissed playing a rash shot, and Jemimah Rodrigues couldn’t carry her form from the last game into this match. When Shafali Verma was dismissed, it looked like the West Indies might find a way back into the game.
  3. Partnership between Kaur and Ghosh: Harmanpreet Kaur got together with Richa Ghosh and added 72 runs for the fourth wicket, taking their team close to the finish line. Kaur did give her wicket away, but Ghosh, who remained unbeaten at 44, showed how much she has matured as a cricketer. She finished things off in style with a four and took India to victory.
  4. Key performers: For West Indies, Taylor played a good knock of 42 runs, while Karishma Ramharack claimed two wickets for 14 runs in her four overs. For India, Deepti Sharma’s three-wicket haul was crucial, and Kaur and Ghosh’s partnership helped the team secure the win.
  5. West Indies’ woes: This was the West Indies’ eighth consecutive loss to India and their 15th consecutive T20I loss. The team now faces a massive challenge to stay in the tournament, with their World Cup dreams now lying in the balance after their second defeat in as many games.

India started their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a thrilling seven-wicket win over Pakistan. They chased down a target of 150 in 19 overs, powered by Jemimah Rodrigues’ sparkling half-century. The team had a perfect start with two wins in two matches, and their next fixture is against England, which will be a much tougher challenge. The Indian team is hopeful of carrying their momentum and securing another win against the 2018 champions. The team will have to play their best cricket to secure another victory and strengthen their chances of making it to the semi-finals.
