5 Records Virat Kohli Broke in the 1st ODI Against West Indies

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 106 against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram wasn’t just a match-winning knock, it was a night of history. India’s premier batter rewrote multiple entries in the record books during a single innings, adding to a legacy that already stands unmatched in modern white-ball cricket. Here’s a rundown of every record Kohli broke or equalled in the first ODI of the series.

The Records, At a Glance

1. Extending the World Record for ODI Centuries

Virat Kohli’s century vs West Indies was his 55th in ODI cricket, a record he already owned outright. The gap between him and second-placed Sachin Tendulkar, who retired with 49 ODI hundreds, now stands at six centuries and continues to grow every time Kohli walks out to bat in coloured clothing.

2. Joining an Exclusive 15,000 ODI Runs Club

Perhaps the most historic moment of the innings came when Kohli crossed the 15,000 ODI runs mark, becoming only the second player in the format’s history to do so after Tendulkar. He reached the landmark in his 303rd ODI innings, doing it in fewer innings than Tendulkar needed, an almost unthinkable achievement for a player many assumed had entered the twilight of his ODI career.

3. Most Centuries Against West Indies

This was also Kohli’s 10th ODI century against West Indies specifically, matching his tally against Sri Lanka for the most hundreds he has scored against any single opponent. Few batters in history have dominated one attack so consistently across more than a decade of cricket.

4. One of His Fastest ODI Hundreds

Virat Kohli brought up his century off just 74 balls, the third-fastest hundred of his ODI career, a reminder that even well past his early-career peak, his ability to accelerate through the gears in a run-chase remains unmatched among his contemporaries.

5. 86th International Century Overall

Zooming out from ODIs alone, this ton was Kohli’s 86th century across all international formats, comfortably the most by any batter in the game’s history and a tally that keeps his name at the top of virtually every major batting conversation in world cricket.

With the West Indies series still to run, and the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, Kohli looks far from done adding to this remarkable list. For more on Kohli’s landmark performances, check out TechnoSports’ Virat Kohli coverage.
