India vs China Badminton Semifinal, Asian Games 2026: Satwik-Chirag Shine But India Settle For Bronze

Heartbreak and heroics often arrive in the same match — and that’s exactly what unfolded when India’s men’s badminton team clashed with China in the Asian Games 2026 semifinal. Despite a stunning performance from Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India fell 3-1 to their fierce continental rivals, settling for a bronze medal.

What Happened In The Semifinal?

The tie kicked off at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium with Lakshya Sen taking on 2025 world champion Shi Yuqi in the opening singles rubber. Sen started brightly but couldn’t hold on, going down 21-16, 21-18 despite fighting back to level the second game at 16-16.

With China leading 1-0, all eyes turned to India’s star doubles pair — and they delivered. Satwik-Chirag, the reigning Asian Games men’s doubles champions, produced a statement performance against world champions Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, dominating the opening game and surviving a late fightback to seal a 21-11, 22-20 victory. It was sweet revenge too, since the same Chinese pair had beaten them at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi just weeks earlier.

Unfortunately, China responded strongly in the remaining rubbers to close out the tie 3-1, denying India a shot at gold.

Asian Games : Overview

How India Got Here

India had already booked their medal by thrashing hosts Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals, with Lakshya Sen, Satwik-Chirag, and Ayush Shetty all winning their respective matches. That dominant showing set up high hopes for a gold-medal rematch against China — the same opponent that beat India 3-2 in the Hangzhou 2023 final, where India settled for silver.

This time, despite Satwik-Chirag’s brilliance, the rest of the tie didn’t go India’s way, and the team had to be content with bronze instead.

Conclusion

Meanwhile, India’s women’s badminton team also saw their campaign end early, bowing out in the quarterfinals after a 3-1 defeat to hosts Japan the previous day.

Still, Satwik-Chirag’s win over the reigning world champions is a huge confidence booster heading into the rest of the season. Their consistency at the top level continues to make them one of badminton‘s most feared doubles pairs on the international circuit, and a medal — even bronze — keeps India’s badminton momentum alive at a major multi-sport event.

Why This Match Mattered?

India-China badminton clashes have become must-watch fixtures in Asian sport, given the intensity and quality on display. This semifinal was no exception — a mix of heartbreak in singles and brilliance in doubles, encapsulating exactly why these two nations remain fierce continental rivals in the sport.
