India Smartphone Price Hikes 2026: Indian smartphone buyers paid significantly more for their devices in the first half of 2026, with new data from Counterpoint Research showing an average smartphone price hike of 16% across the market. The increase, driven largely by a global memory chip crunch, has hit budget phones the hardest while reshaping which brands are gaining and losing ground.

Why India Smartphone Price Hikes in 2026 Are Rising

According to Counterpoint Research analyst Shubham Singh, the price surge traces back to a sharp escalation in DRAM and NAND memory costs, fueled by surging global demand for AI data centre hardware that has squeezed the memory chip supply available to consumer electronics makers. A weaker rupee has compounded the problem by making imported components more expensive for Indian manufacturers and importers.

Budget Phones Take the Biggest Hit

The pain is not evenly distributed. Phones priced below ₹10,000 saw average price increases of around 32%, and shipments in that segment collapsed by roughly 65% year-over-year as cost-conscious buyers delayed upgrades or dropped out of the market entirely. The ₹10,000-15,000 band also saw shipments decline by about 20%. In contrast, the above-₹20,000 premium segment kept growing, helped along by higher launch prices and a rise in financing-based purchases.

Price SegmentImpact
Below ₹10,000~32% price hike; shipments down ~65% YoY
₹10,000–15,000Shipments down ~20%
Above ₹20,000Continued growth via higher launch prices, financing
OnePlus (industry-wide avg.)Only ~8% price increase

OnePlus Bucks the Trend

Not every brand followed the market’s steep upward curve. OnePlus stood out with an average price increase of just 8%, far below the industry’s 16% mean, even as some competitors raised prices by well over 100% on select models. Counterpoint data shows OnePlus was the fastest-growing brand among the top five online sellers in the above-₹20,000 segment during Q2 2026, and it held the No. 1 spot in the ₹30,000-45,000 price band, with quarter-over-quarter shipment growth of around 49%.

Analyst Tarun Pathak attributed OnePlus’s resilience to early component procurement and a diversified product portfolio, noting the brand “managed to avoid choosing between margin protection or volume” while rivals were forced to pick one or the other.

How Manufacturers Are Coping

Rather than absorb the full cost of pricier memory chips, many manufacturers have quietly trimmed specifications instead of raising prices further. Counterpoint’s data shows budget phones shifting from 8GB RAM and 256GB storage configurations down to 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, alongside a renewed push toward 4G models and simplified camera setups to keep entry-level price points intact.

India’s average smartphone selling price climbed to a record $318 in Q2 2026, and financing options now account for more than half of all mainline smartphone purchases in the country, according to Counterpoint’s tracking, underscoring how deeply the price pressure has reshaped buyer behaviour.

The trend also mirrors what’s happening globally, though India’s exposure is especially acute. Counterpoint’s broader tracking shows retail smartphone prices climbing roughly 21% across India for the full year, the steepest increase of any major market, ahead of Asia Pacific’s 19%, the Middle East and Africa’s 18%, and Latin America’s 16%. The gap is largely explained by India’s outsized reliance on entry-level and budget devices, the exact segment where memory costs have hit hardest.

Memory alone now accounts for over 45% of the bill of materials on a low-end smartphone, up from under 20% before the crunch began, according to Counterpoint’s cost breakdowns. Build costs for low-end phones have risen by roughly 70% year-over-year, with memory responsible for almost all of that jump, while mid-range devices have seen build costs rise about 52%, with memory contributing roughly 40% of that increase.
